It all began…

Our story begins in Florence in 1979, when a group of families of children with Down syndrome met with the aim of sharing information and experiences, founding Trisomia 21 Association.

The photo shows a large group of people. Families, members, friends and supporters of Trisomia 21 aps.

From a modest space on the second floor at 74 Via Borgo Pinti, under the guidance of geneticist Maria Luisa Giovannucci, we launched our first therapeutic programs to support our children and, together with them, build a society that knows how to care for those who are vulnerable rather than marginalize them.

Over time, our commitment and the services we offer have grown, and in 2009 we opened our current premises at 18 Viale Volta, which now houses all our activities.

These premises have become the hub of the Association’s operations, officially recognised by the Region of Tuscany as a Centre for the Developmental Support of People with Down’s Syndrome and related intellectual disabilities.

In 2014, we expanded our mission by opening a flat adjacent to our main premises, also on Viale Volta, to help our young people and adults become more independent.

We continue to grow as an association, as a healthcare centre and as a group of families to support people with Down’s syndrome or similar disabilities, accompanying them all on their journey towards achieving the greatest possible independence and genuine inclusion: in education, employment and society.

What we do

We create personalised programmes based on needs and age, including:

  • neurological and psychomotor rehabilitation
  • cognitive enhancement
  • speech therapy
  • autonomy
  • job placement
  • parental support
  • and more (visit the Services and Activities page)

All activities are linked by the Project for Life, a structured and personalised programme that runs from childhood to adulthood, with the ultimate goal of achieving independence.

We are the only centre in the Tuscany region to offer comprehensive services to a significant number of users, covering both medical and social aspects, and we are committed to providing comprehensive support to parents and children, from birth to integration into school and the world of work.

We collaborate with local services and schools to promote inclusion.

Who does it

The Association is led by a Board which takes decisions collectively where necessary. The Board is composed on a rotating basis of a group of member families, selected on a voluntary basis.

The coordinator, Ivana Pili, a psychologist working with the association, oversees the organisation and personalised rehabilitation programmes.

Our team is made up of highly qualified professionals who place people at the heart of everything we do.
